Hey all,
we’re in Batchawana Bay which is about 40 minutes north on HWY 17. We’re five days into our tour and all is well
We got away early Thursday AM to make our tour kick off in Quebec City. We played the Casbah and it was awesome! Great venue, nice people. We even had a look see at who was coming in the summer and look who we found….

Friday we trekked along to Ottawa for our show at the Rainbow.
It was maybe the best crowd we’ve played to there. We got to hang with our pal John Crowely as well. Thanks to Mr. Crowely for putting us up and the late night BBQ! Saturday found us back in Lavigne at the Lavigne Tavern. Guy and Judy have become great friends and we always enjoy playing there, not to mention the Pizza is the best and the pie and cake, well I don’t want to say too much cause then everyone will know, but some of the staff there are awesome bakers and we love the goodies!
Last night we played in Batchawana Bay

at the Voyageurs Lodge and Cookhouse. We discovered this joint a few tours back and like to stop for the amazing home cooking and Best Baked Beans in Canada!

This time we decided to do a little show as well and had a real blast playing for the locals. The folks who run the place are so nice and treated us like gold. It was a great time and I know we’ll be back here for sure in the future!!!
Today after breakfast we had a rousing match of Bocce.

Karl Bastard took home the trophy today but it IS early in the season so it’s still anyones championship. There will be more details on this championship in the coming days. All I can say is…shine up those balls folks….the challenge is on….Stay tuned for the official bocci challenge video…
Well, we’re off to Wawa now to play the local high school theatre tonight. I’ll try to keep the updates regular but up here in northern Ontario web service is here and there so be patient! Stay tuned,
Hey folks,
We’re alive and well in Saskatoon. We survived our first week back on the road nicely too. We got to hang at our Uncle Pat and Aunt D’s for a minute in Trenton. On our down time we stopped into our pal’s studio for a fun visit. Thurday we had a quick in and out with Toronto, which we all agreed we enjoyed a little more than our usual – stay for four or five days. Before we knew it we were headed north for the Lavigne Tavern to make some new friends. Guy and Judy run the joint and are some real nice folk. The Tavern itself is right up our ally. Good Pizza and a real vibrant room to sing in! Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and we were flattered at their “best band to ever play Lavigne” banter! Can’t wait to return! Here is a funny pic of us rocking out…
We hit the road bright and early Saturday to find our old friend HWY 17 and to make the long drive to Winnipeg with a quick pause in Wawa. We made Wawa after a quick stop at the Voyageur Cookhouse for some home made baked beans (Karl had the Chili). We had a fun , intimate show in Wawa and after a quick Turkey feed we hit the dark road for Winnipeg. It’s a harrowing drive to make at night but it was necessary. Fortunately we only saw one moose. We also got a pretty awesome sunrise out of it too!
We rolled into Winnipeg around noon to make new friends with our host, Ainslie. Much to our surprise, Ainslie was in the process of whipping up a little turkey dinner. Two in less that 24hrs! Spoiled Bastards indeed! Our venue in Winnipeg was awesome. An old theatre transformed into a show room. Real nice folks running it too. After the show we hit up the Times Change(d) club to catch the one and only, Big Dave Maclean. After Dave’s set we got up to rock out a couple tunes. We had Clayton Sample sit in with us. Clayton used to play with The Rockin’ Highliners who I caught a few times at the Harvest Jazz & Blues Fest years back. Even Big Dave sat in on Harp for a tune. Real good times. Here is a pic of Karl Bastard having fun. Yep. This is what it looks like folks….
Now we’re in Saskatoon and are chillin’ at my cousin’s house. Pretty nice to hang with family and have some home cookin’. One show down at Bud’s already. Two more to go though then it’s off to rock the Main Liner Pub in Medicine Hat this weekend, Really looking forward to that!
Some press has started rolling in for this tour too so I tought I’d post a link or two….Here is a nice article from Calgary based BeatRoutes Magazine. Click here. A little mention in our Pal Jim Jones’ Blog Here. Jim is a DJ for Power 97 in The Peg. This has one of my favourite quotes ever in it…have a read and let me know if you think you know what part I’m talking about!
So later this weekend is The Music NB conference in Moncton NB. There will be lots of showcases as well as an award dinner to boot. We’re up for Blues Recording of the year and the voting is open till the end of this week. If you’d like to help us out by voting all you need is an email address and you’re good to go. You can vote HERE and click off Best Blues Recording as well as Fan Choice. There are lots of folks to votes for who have been kicking ass and taking names lately from Sleepy Driver to Andy Brown to Scotty and The Stars and Chris Colepaugh. check it out and take part!
Well that about gets us up to date. I hope to see some of y’all out there! Feel free to tell you’re friends across the country that we’re out here and that we’d love to meet them, and don’t forget to check out our tour dates. More dates are posted all the time!

Man. I feel like I’ve been such a slacker and that I’ve neglected y’all in Blog world. Well I have been a lil busy so it’s not like nothings been going on….
We just finished a quickie with Ontario and then did our annual three night run in St. Andrews NB at The Red Herring. We have a long history with the folks who own that bar and it’s always like going home. This past weekend was no exception. We had a killer time and the crowds were awesome. Big ups to everyone who came out on the Sunday. What a freakin’ time!
Since I’m still homeless I’ve been hanging the past week at the family camp at Davidson Lake. It’s been awesome but there is no internet so I gotta come to the city to work. Oh well pros n cons I guess. I Just finished a radio bit with Matt Rainnie at CBC in Charlottetown that will air today. We’re promoting the Cd release show that happens Saturday at The Alibi in Charlottetown. We’re stoked to get back to the island and rock a new joint! Show starts at 9.30pm and the cover is $10. Tell a friend!
Ok, so I FINALLY edited up some more footage of our west coast tour video. This is a little compilation of our time at the amazing Black Rock Resort in Ucluelet BC. We get to see some beautiful places and this joint was right near the top. Imagine The Bastards staying at a world class resort! We were beside ourselves. This is definitely the nicest place we’ve ever stayed. I’m editing some video of the other end of the accommodation spectrum now so I hope to have that done in a week or so! Enjoy this video and remember if you are viewing on Facebook visit www.rossneilsen.com as the video’s don’t play so well. Also the video is from my crappy camera so it’s poor quality but hey, it’s all I got!
I hope y’all are well and enjoying summer! Rock ya soon,
Ross
It was pretty cool for me to finally get a chance to chat with Holger. I’ve listened to him for a long time so to be on the other end of the program was a little surreal. We had a great chat. We spoke at great length about the recording of Redemption as well as the life and times of the great Jim Dickinson and his amazing family. Interview is broken into two parts. I hope you enjoy listening.

So last Friday at Blues On Whyte we met a lady named Dixie. Dixie is a friend of my best friend Jim. Dixie owns a Tattoo Shop with a dude named Kris Schule. The Shop is called Zen Custom Tattooing. After some chatting about it, I told Dixie we’d stop in to see what’s what on Monday.
Well Today is Monday. We stopped by the shop this afternoon but the young apprentice we spoke with said they were booked until Wednesday. Of course we had to leave town on Wednesday so that wouldn’t work. After a few moments, Kris, the aforementioned owner came by to say hi. After some chit chat Kris suggested we come back at 10pm and he would stay late and tattoo us.
After a brief foray to the Mall and Hudsons, we hit the internet to gather tattoo ideas. Around 9pm we gathered ourselves to head on over to the shop. All went well. Shawn and I got in for some work, unfortunately for our pal Jim we used up all the time so Jim had to reschedule (as he is from Edmontown and could come back later). Sorry Jim!!!! We’d like to say a big thanks to Kris Schule for working late and squeezing us in. This is a great shop folks. If you are in Edmonton hit ‘em up…..

Hi all,
well we made it to the island for a week of fun shows and beautiful sights. We saw Bears, Otters, Whales, Sea Lions, German Tourists, Beautiful resorts, crack house hotels, Mountains, Oceans, Beaches, and amazing sunsets. We were tormented by crows, crazy German locals, Bamford’s AND We got to see our friends get married, sort of. We got lots of video that we’ll be editing down for an episode of Bastard TV over the next few days. In the mean time here are a couple of pics from the trip…

We’re back in the Okanagan now and we’re getting ready to head over to my Auntie Kathryn’s for a bbq. We’re stoked for this as Auntie is a bad ass freestyle Chef. After lunch and a hang we’ll head on up to Salmon Arm for a show. Really looking forward to this as we’ve never played Salmon Arm before. Should be fun. Tomorrow we head west for what I think is the last time. We’re hitting Kamloops for a show presented by 92.5FM The X. We’re super excited and have some expectations as we are currently holding down the Number 1 spot in the blues category on that station. The we very slowly start making our way East with a two week rip through Alberta and a brief stop in Toon town again. Looking forward to it all. We’ll have some downtime in Edmonton during the days so we’ll whip up a few more webisodes for y’all to laugh at. Stay tuned…..

Our first tour of Canada we played a pub in Kelowna. It was a soul sucking gut wrenching experience. It was busy but full of teeny bopper kids that were there to score chemicals and booty. There were a few ‘working girls’ too if I recall. We left everything we had on that stage and the kids were semi indifferent until the end of the night where everyone tells you how great it was. This example best sums up the experience….
Mid Performance …….
ME – Who wants free booze (we were sponsored by Sailor Jerry)
Crowd – Silence
I mean really? Most spots would claw over each other to taste the goods. We learned to suck it up on that gig. Later when we were back at the Kelowna Villa licking our wounds we were reminded of the Joel Plaskett tune where he references Kelowna with the line “picture the sound of one hand clapping, now picture half that sound, Thats why I hate that town”. This made us feel moderately better.
The second time we performed at a venue designed for mamby pamby soft spoken kind of acts. The sort of place where the owner is actually afraid of the drums and INSISTS on doing the sound even though they don’t know anything about that tedious, technical assembly of sonic science. The room was full of speakers which is fine if everything is mic’d but if not you have vocal and acoustic blaring at the back of the room with the drums and bass way at the front. Brilliant. We realized that That room was also not for us and thought maybe we would have to skip Kelowna next tour. This was a bummer as I had lived here years before and still had lots of friends and family that wanted to see us perform.
Not too long ago I was relating our Kelowna experience to someone and including the Plaskett story when I was informed that Joel no longer sings it like that and has made amends with Kelowna. Confused and feeling defeated I thought, “Well you can’t please em all and maybe Kelowna just isn’t for us”.
I had known about The Blue Gator Bar from my old days living in Ktown and performing with Dog Skin Suit. It was in a new location now and at our previous gigs we were told by our friends that we had to play there. So after much emailing and rustling I finally got us in there. Last night was our first of two nights. It was amazing. Dancers right on the first tune. Great crowd that ate up the originals all night long. Good Staff and a nice owner. All the things you want in a gig. It is clear that this venue is going into the list beside Mikey’s in Calgary, Blues on Whtye in Edmonton, Buds in Toon town, The “Ho” in Canmore, Tofino and a few other venues we play that just kick ass. A fine mix of people and no pretentiousness, except for a few hipsters. It was like old home week for me as I got to reconnect with lots of old friends and got to hang with some family too!
I guess things really do change and you just need to keep looking. Don’t take defeat. Don’t lie down. Stand up, dust yourself off and try harder. Like my mentor and friend Morgan Davis says – “keep pushing up on it”. Thats good advice I think about everyday.
There are some funny circles in life that appear to run a lot of things, but just underneath where they spin their wheels there is something else, a dark cool place where Real resides. A place where what you get IS what you see. Where people ARE who they are crazy or sane. Where true effort is recognized and applauded. This is where we spin our wheels. It’s a heavy load but we’ll keep pushing up. One bleeding set of ears at a time.
